As well as enjoying being in Seinajoki itself (and Finland more generally), I very much appreciated the calm and extremely spacious environment in which the residency itself is situated. The ‘apartment’ where I stayed was, for me, extremely comfortable; and the residency managers – Minna and Hilla – were extremely thoughtful, kind, and very quick to respond to any queries I had. All in all, I must say that I felt very much at home there, which is perhaps one of the reasons why I was able to be so productive. I’m very much looking forward to going back.

CUCKOO’S NEST TAITEILIJARESIDENSSI

Seinäjoen Taiteilijaseuran ylläpitämä visuaalisen alan taiteilijoille suunnattu residenssi Cuckoo’s Nest sijaitsee Seinäjoella Piirin alueella. Residenssi tarjoaa taiteilijoille luonnonsuojelu- ja puistoalueiden ympäröimän, inspiroivan työskentely-ympäristön historiallisella Törnävän sairaala-alueella kävelymatkan päässä palveluista. Vierailijoille on tarjolla residenssin puolesta taiteilijaystävällistä vuokraa vastaan majoitus- ja työtilaa.
Seinäjoen Taiteilijaseura ry on 39 kuvataiteilijan yhdistys, joka on perustettu 1960. Toiminta keskittyy näyttelyiden järjestämiseen, taidekokoelman hoitoon sekä taidelainaamon ylläpitoon. Yhteisö on perustanut residenssin 2023. Taiteilijaseuran jäsenet tarjoavat residenssitaiteilijalle luonnollista verkostoa alueella. Seuran toimisto sijaitsee majoitustilojen viereisessä talossa ja residenssin työhuoneen vieressä.

RESIDENSSI JA HINNAT
Taiteilijaseura tarjoaa kahta vaihtoehtoista pakettia. Toisessa työ- ja majoitustilat ovat eri huoneissa. Paketti soveltuu hyvin esimerkiksi öljymaalaukseen, ympäristö- tai yhteisötaiteilijalle. Toinen vaihtoehto on tila, jossa voi sekä majoittua että työskennellä samassa. Yhdistelmätila soveltuu esimerkiksi mediataiteilijalle tai pienempimuotoiseen työskentelyyn.
Majoitustilojen hintaan kuuluvat vesi, sähkö, internet-yhteys, liinavaatteet, keittiötarvikkeet ja pyykinpesumahdollisuus. Matka- ja elinkustannukset taiteilija maksaa itse.
Majoitustiloissa taiteilijoille on omat, lukittavat makuuhuoneet. Suihkut ja wc sijaitsevat yhteisissä tiloissa. Yhteiskäytössä olevasta keittiöstä löytyy perustarvikkeet ruuanlaittoon sekä mikro, liesi ja uuni. Perheenjäsenet ovat tervetulleita residenssiin, mutta huomioittehan huonetilojen kokorajoitteet. Mukaan tulevista lisähenkilöistä sovitaan erikseen ja heistä peritään lisämaksu. Lemmikit eivät ole sallittuja. Ennen residenssiin saapumista maksetaan 100 € varausmaksu, joka vähennetään residenssin kokonaishinnasta. Jos taiteilija jättää saapumatta, varausmaksua ei palauteta.
TYÖ- JA MAJOITUSTILA ERIKSEEN
Esimerkiksi taidemaalarille tai yhteisötaiteilijalle sopivan työtilan varusteluun sisältyvät sähkö ja vesi. Valoisassa huoneessa on maalausteline ja työpöytä. Samaan hintaan on varattavissa isompi tila, videotykki ja pöydät noin 25 hengen lyhyemmille yleisötilaisuuksille. Residenssi tarjoaa aloituspaketin perusmateriaaleja, vaikka lähtökohtaisesti taiteilija kustantaa materiaalit itse.

Työhuoneen ja majoitustilojen yhdistelmä (18 m²) Seinäjoen Taiteilijaseuran residenssissä, johon sisältyy samaan hintaan isompi, varattava tila, videotykki ja pöydät noin 25 hengen yleisötilaisuuksille. Soveltuu pienempimuotoiseen työskentelyyn tai esimerkiksi mediataiteilijalle. Valoisassa huoneessa on työpöytä.

HAKEMINEN
Seinäjoen Taiteilijaseura avaa haun residenssiin kaksi kertaa vuodessa. Residenssiin valitaan hakemusten perusteella ammattitaiteilijoita kaikkialta maailmasta, myös Suomesta. Työskentelyjaksot voivat olla eri mittaisia kuukaudesta kolmeen kuukauteen. Residenssitaiteilijat valitaan teoskuvien ja työsuunnitelmien perusteella. Päätökset julkaistaan ja valituille ilmoitetaan valinnasta sähköpostitse. Hakulomakkeen linkki aukeaa aina haun ollessa ajankohtainen. Hakemuslomake tulee täyttää englannin, ruotsin tai suomen kielellä.
Kuvataiteilijoita kannustetaan työsuunnitelmiin, joissa viritellään monitaiteista yhteistyötä alueen toimijoiden kanssa tai tuotetaan taidetta alueella läsnäollen ja vuoropuhelussa alueen asukkaiden kanssa, esimerkiksi osallistavan taiteen, työpajojen tai näyttelyiden muodossa. Henkilökunta auttaa taiteilijaa yhteistyötahojen etsimisessä alueelta. Residenssillemme tärkeitä arvoja ovat sosiaalinen ja ekologinen kestävä kehitys, paikkasidonnaisuus ja osaamisen kehittäminen.
Hakija huolehtii itse siitä, että tarvittavat vakuutukset ja matkustusasiakirjat ovat ajan tasalla. Residenssi toimittaa pyynnöstä vakuutuksia ja matkustusasiakirjoja varten vaadittavat lausunnot ja todistukset.
MINIRESIDENSSIT JA VIERASHUONE
Toisinaan residenssiin jää vapaata tilaa taiteilijoiden väliin tai tulee peruutuksia. Varsinaisen haun lisäksi tarjoamme lyhyempiä, päivästä kuukauteen mittaisia residenssejä tai majoitusta. Vapaista ajoista ilmoitellaan erikseen tai voit olla yhteydessä. Lyhyitä aikoja voi varata vapaamuotoisesti sähköpostilla tai puhelimitse.

CUCKOO’S NEST ARTIST RESIDENCY

Run by Seinäjoen Taiteilijaseura (Seinäjoki Artists’ Association), Cuckoo’s Nest is an artist residency located within the historical Törnävä hospital area in Seinäjoki, Western Finland. Surrounded by parks and conservation areas, the residency provides artists with an inspiring environment as well as affordable accommodation and working space within walking distance of essential services.
Seinäjoen Taiteilijaseura, an association of 39 visual artists, was established in 1960. Our core activities include organising exhibitions, managing an art collection, and maintaining an art rental shop. Our office stands right next to the residency accommodation and workspace. Together, Cuckoo’s Nest residency and our artist community provide artists-in-residence with an organic network in the area.

RESIDENCY DETAILS AND COSTS
The Artists’ Association provides two alternative packages. In the other one accommodation and workspace are in separate rooms and it is ideal for oil painting, environmental art, and for community artists. The other option is an accommodation and workspace combo. The combination of spaces suits well for media artists or for small scale working.
The accommodation price covers essential amenities such as water, electricity, internet, bed linen, kitchenware and laundry facilities. Artists are responsible for their own travel and living expenses.
The residency has private, lockable bedrooms for artists with a shared bathroom in the common area. The shared kitchen has essential cooking facilities, including a microwave, stove, and oven. Family members are welcome, but please be mindful of room size restrictions. Additional people joining the artist need to be agreed upon separately and will incur a charge. Pets, unfortunately, are not allowed. Before arrival, a €100 reservation fee is required, which will be subtracted from the total cost. Please note that the reservation fee is non-refundable in the event of a no-show.
SEPARATE WORK SPACE AND ACCOMMODATION
This workspace is suitable for painters and community artists, and the price includes amenities such as electricity and water. The bright room features an easel and a desk. For the same price, it is also possible to book a larger room equipped with a video projector and tables, which can be used for public events of approximately 25 people. The residency provides a starter kit of basic materials, although artists are generally responsible for covering the costs of their materials.

A combination of work space and accommodation (18 m²) in the residency of Seinäjoki Artists’ Association. HOW TO APPLY?
Seinäjoen Taiteilijaseura announces an open call for the residency twice a year. Professional artists from around the world, including Finland, are selected based on their applications to participate in the residency. Residency periods can vary in duration, ranging from one to three months. The artists are chosen based on work plans and accompanying photographs of artwork. The decisions are published, and the selected artists are notified of their acceptance via email. When applications are open, the link to the application form becomes active. Please note that the application form must be completed in English, Swedish, or Finnish.
We encourage visual artists to create work plans that foster multidisciplinary collaboration with local actors and/or engage with the local community through art projects, workshops, or exhibitions. The residency staff is happy to help artists connect with potential collaborators in the area. Social and environmental sustainability, site-specific approaches, and skills development are integral values of our residency program.
If you are interested in applying, please make sure that you have the necessary insurance and travel documents. The residency can provide statements and certificates required for insurance and travel documents if needed.
MINI-RESIDENCIES AND GUEST ROOM
Sometimes there are free vacancies between artists or someone may cancel a residency. In addition to actual residencies we offer shorter, from one night to a month mini-residensies or a guest room. We announce the free vacancies every now and then or you can always ask. One can book the short vacancies informally by emailing or calling.
